Mona Alshahawey

Dr. Alshahawey, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D., is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, where she conducts research in Dr. Caitrin McDonough’s laboratory. Her work specializes in clinical pharmacology, cardiovascular disease, and pharmacogenomics, with a strong focus on leveraging large-scale electronic health record (EHR) and genomic data from the National Institutes of Health–funded All of Us Research Program, one of the largest and most diverse biomedical research initiatives in the world. Her current research investigates statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS), hypertension phenotypes and their impact on cardiovascular and neurodegenerative outcomes, and the pharmacogenomic implications of P2Y12 inhibitors (CYP2C19 phenotypes) in cardiovascular and bleeding outcomes. She also explores opioid pharmacogenomics, particularly the role of CYP2D6 genotypes and phenotypes in chronic pain management. Her work integrates clinical, medication, socioeconomic, and genetic data through advanced computational phenotyping and population-scale data analytics to advance equitable precision medicine.

Dr. Alshahawey is also a tenured Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. She holds both a Master’s degree (2017) and a Ph.D. (2021) in Clinical Pharmacy (Clinical Trials). With over eight years of experience, her expertise spans clinical trials, pharmacogenetics, health equity research, pharmacoeconomics, patient-centered outcomes, qualitative research, survey methodology, and comparative effectiveness research. Her research mission centers on advancing precision medicine through rigorous, data-driven approaches that improve cardiovascular and pharmacotherapeutic outcomes across diverse populations.
