This individualized fellowship is a 2-year program for pharmacists desiring to develop advanced skills in clinical practice, independent research, and teaching in the area of health equity. The program’s overarching goal is to foster an environment that develops the translational scientific skills of prospective fellows to increase competitiveness for a position in academia, community health, or a health policy environment.
The fellowship is 2 years in length, beginning July 1 and ending June 30.
The annual fellowship stipend is benchmarked on NIH stipend levels (i.e., $53,760 in 2021). Additional benefits are available to fellows, including health insurance and retirement savings plans.
This fellowship program is housed at the UF Research and Academic Center in Orlando, Florida, which serves as the primary site of education for PharmD students housed at the Orlando campus of the University of Florida College of Pharmacy.
The fellow will develop clinical expertise in caring for underserved medical communities in the Central Florida region through activities at Apopka Clinic and Knights Clinic. Additional clinical opportunities may be available in other affiliated clinics at UF Health.
The fellowship is housed through the UF College of Pharmacy Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Health Equity. The fellow would be provided with opportunities for both direct patient care and oversight of pharmacy students in direct patient care.
The fellow will have opportunities in the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum to create and deliver lectures, lead case discussions, and develop test questions; develop and deliver topic discussions to APPE students; and participate in the Academic Teaching Certificate Program. Additional opportunities include lectures and leading case discussions in the community regarding health equity. The fellow will also have an opportunity to participate in an interdisciplinary graduate certificate in health equity.
The fellow also will design, initiate, and conduct new research pertinent to health equity and in line with their own research interests. Opportunities include: participation in ongoing prospective, multi-center clinical trials; retrospective observational studies using UF’s Integrated Data Repository, the OneFlorida Data Trust, or other large administrative datasets (Medicare, Medicaid, Marketscan commercial claims, etc.); and cross-sectional analyses using large national survey datasets (e.g., NHANES).
Publishing in peer-reviewed journals is an expectation of all fellows. The fellow should have excellent oral and written communication skills and will be expected to present research findings at scientific conferences, compose manuscripts, and assist in grant writing
Fellows are also eligible for tuition waivers for coursework through the UF Employee Education Program as well as a variety of other professional development programs available to UF and Health Science Center employees.
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited institution
- Florida Pharmacist license in good standing; or eligibility for such licensure. The fellow must be licensed by October 1 of their first year.
- PGY1 or PGY2 pharmacy residency
- Prior experience with data collection and research dissemination
